The field of opponents challenging State Senator Jose Peralta for his District 13 seat has narrowed.

Prominent LGBTQ activist Andy Marra announced in a statement last Wednesday that she has suspended her campaign to “build progressive strength and unity around one candidate.” According to campaign finance records, she raised more than $47,000 for the race.

“What matters most is making sure a real Democrat wins this seat,” Marra said, “which is why I’m endorsing Jessica Ramos in her bid.”

Moin Choudhury, a local attorney, remains in the race. East Elmhurst teen and Stuyvesant High School student Tahseen Chowdhury has also dropped his run for office.

Ramos, a former district leader and aide for Mayor Bill de Blasio, said she was “honored” to have Marra’s support.

“We’re creating a united front of women, people of color and traditionally marginalized communities to say that the Republican Party has no business here in the most diverse community in the country,” Ramos said. “We are to be represented by a real Democrat who is going to stand up for progressive values, and more than that, roll up her sleeves and fight everyday.”
