The site, Vantage Learning's MyAccess!, has several pros and cons. First of all, students chose from more than 500 writing prompts, all of which compare to state and national standards. One their essay is submitted, it is electronically graded by a six and four-point scoring system which focuses on meaning, content and development, organization, language and style, and mechanics and conventions.
The teacher is also able to build their own assignments for student to complete, however My Access! will not be able to evaluate them. A negative part of this program is that although it may rate a student's term paper as an 'A', it will highlights all the errors found, which suggest to the student that perfect grammar and punctuation does not equal perfect grades. Available with this service is an online writer's guide and several graphic organizers that allows students to find out the "how's" and "why's" of grammar that may have been highlighted in their essay. Also available for the convenience of the teachers is the ability to send out a form letter to parents informing them of the child's recent writing assignment score.
